| The morning sky reflects the masks
of the youths' faces when painted as is customary for ceremonial dances . |
The sacred fire .... purifying,
enlivening.... transforming. All of us and the recording equipment were
smudged in the smoke of a sacred fire as we began our camp experience. |
| Historic articles, pictures
and other educational materials were provided by Elders and aboriginal
studies teachers. |

and teacher shares her art! |
Cheryl Smith (Gamilaraay) starts the
day singing us her song to the Mother Earth and then joins Dawn to teach
the youth CSPAW in Gamilaraay/Gimbaynggirr). During
a break, Dawn demonstrates manta ray and dolphin hugs:)
By the ocean is a perfect location for
practice. One day later in the week dolphins were sited just off shore.
Elder, Bill Smith said to the children, "the dolphins picked up your song
and are carrying it around the world!"

Elder, Bill Smith joined the camp to
share stories, oversee the fire, supply teaching tools and lead impromptu
learning activities. Teacher, Simone Jordan and artist, Debbie Towers contributed
their talents, materials and enthusiasm as well making this a very rich
experience. Adult volunteers organized swimming, bush hikes, delicious
meals while also supporting whatever was needed to help the youth complete
their recording. Tears, laughter, informal play and talks as well as
sometimes challenging dynamics and escapades created a profound experience
for each of us as we learned the application of this simple song in our lives.
Especially poignant was the fact that for most of the children, and adults
too, learning CSPAW in the Gamilaraay/Gimbaynggirr translation was the first
time they had learned anything in their traditional language. In this
time of reconciliation aboriginal people are regaining worldwide respect and
acknowledgement for their knowing, history and unique contributions to life
on this planet. Aboriginal studies has become a part of educational
curriculum in public schools just in the past couple of years. There are 500-700
aboriginal languages in Australia which all are associated with a particular
geographic area. Many have become extinct but many are alive and used
today. It is a gift to humanity to have the living wisdom of these
people be acknowledged, restored, honored and shared.
