Close ups of the children's drawings depicting the three primary clans of the Mohawk people: the turtle, bear and wolf clans.

The mission of the school is:
"Through our language the Akwesahsne Freedom School will support and encourage a process for each child to learn their roles and responsibilities as Haudenosaunee through an understanding of the Ohen:ten Karihwatekwen (words that come before all else) as the core of their learning experience.  The three guiding principles of Sken:nen (Peace), Kasatstensera (Inner Strength or some say Power) and Kanikonriio (Good Mind) will thrive and be heard in the voices of our children for the next seven generations."

Singing practice and learning the words to the CSPAW Mohawk song.
Dedicated singers practicing and recording together.  Then everyone coming together to sing and dance the song in  a Mohawk social dance called a Round Dance.  In this dance the song is sung as the dancers move in one direction in the circle and then it is repeated and sung again as the circle of dancers go in the other direction, this balances the good and the bad.  There is a gentle shuffling of the feet in this dance reminding us to walk gently on Mother Earth.

Below Konwanaktotani Elvera Sargent, AFS School Manager opens the circle toning the Children's Peace Bowl outside by the tree as the dancers form a circle and dance a Round Dance around the tree while the singers sing CSPAW Mohawk version.
Even the dog, who many would like to shoo away gets into the center of the circle!:)
As we close and say our Goodbyes, the children each tone the Children's Peace Bowl, adding their  love and their prayers for peace joining with other children around the World in voice, heart and intention.  Their hearts' voices flow through the waters and are carried on the wind....to all life.
